General-

Established as county seat when Grayson County organized in 1846.   First laid out a short distance west of present location, but because of the scare firewood and water, it was moved to it's present site in 1848.  Early establishment of several colleges, as well as a drama club, earned Sherman title of "Athens of Texas."  Today an educational, medical, commercial, and industrial center with a large number of Fortune 500 industries located here.  Numerous historical markers in and around the city.  Historical driving tour brochure available at chamber of commerce at 1815 S Sam Rayburn Mon. - Fri 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Several antique shops are centered around the intersection of Lamar and Travis Streets.

Home of Presbyterian-affiliated Austin College, chartered in 1849, located first in Huntsville, 1852; moved to Sherman and enrolled the first students here in 1878.

American Victorian Furniture Museum-

This includes a collection of American Victorian furniture housed in historic church downtown.  Open Sun. 2-5 p.m.   At 201 E. Lamar St.

C.S. Roberts House

Beautiful Victorian home that belonged to long-time family of Sherman currently maintained by the Sherman Preservation League.  This Eastlake-style house was built in 1886.  It is part of Heritage Row, and area of elegant Victorian homes along S. Crockett St.  Driving maps available from chamber of commerce.   Tours Sat. & Sun.  2-4 p.m. at 915 S. Crockett St.

Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge-

Wildlife exhibit in the lo9bby of American Bank, Midway Mall, features exotic wildlife from around the world set in natural settings.  Open Mon. -Thurs. 9 a.m - 5 p.m., Fri 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.  At 5000 Texoma Parkway.

Kelly Square-

Shopping opportunities in beautifully restored three-story turn-of-the-century building;  art galleries, antiques, foods, specialties. Open Mon. - Fri. 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Sat 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. 115 S. Travis.

Red River Historical Museum-

IN old Carnegie Library with preserved 1933 WPA murals.   History of Grayson County; pictures and artifacts.  The building is on the National Register of Historic Places.  Open Tues. - Fr. 10 a.m. - noon, 1 - 4:30 p.m.; Sat 2 - 5 p.m. 301 S. Walnut.
